Don Jazzy Raises Alarm Over Bride Price Controversy

Nigerian popular music producer, Don Jazzy, has expressed his mind on the way some guys treat their wives.

Jazzy stated that there’s need to educate those men to stop the bad treatment of their wives because of the bride price paid to secure their hands in marriage.

He explained that disrespecting one’s wife because of the bride price paid is a shallow mindset.

Jazzy stated this on his Twitter account, where he tweeted: “So apparently some of the men that disrespect and treat their wives like sh*t do so becos they paid some useless bride price. Kai, how do we educate the multitude with this shallow mindset?”

His assumption is a controversy in some homes, as respect for the woman diminishes as a result of the bride price paid on her.

Some men are fond of calling their wives names, and they will never have a second thought before descending on them at every provocation.

Meanwhile, some people have responded to Don Jazzy’s statement

Jaytheunbothered said: “I’ve always said the bride price tradition needs to go. It holds no water in this modern time and age.

“What is the purpose? And why won’t a man feel like he owns a person after paying for her?”

Efosa stated: “I disagree with you sir. Some, it’s as a result of how they see their father treat their mother.”

Izzyknows said: “As I’m talking right now, someone is in the village and they’re saying the bride price is 1M naira. I mean right now, just got off the phone with his mum.

“They know he doesn’t have this money, his in-law has taken a seat far away telling the boy to discuss with his kinsmen smh.”

Vee Stan expressed: “By teaching them that bride price payment isn’t equivalent to possessing, buying or owning any woman.

“I feel men to understand that marriage isn’t a master – slave relationship. It’s a partnership where both parties are meant to have equal rights.

“A woman isn’t a tail!!!”

Morgan Aliticus Playmaker said: “I think the whole bride price system should go tbh… Cos some cultures make the whole process seem like a sort of trade, which shouldn’t be.

“You hear questions like; “do you know she is a doctor” “do you know how much was spent for her education. It really doesn’t help at all.”

Omotayo of Lagos stated: “The bride price cultured needs to be canceled, lets people marry each other out of love without one feeling indebted to the other.”

Miracle Worker said: “This set of Men actually didn’t grow with “love” they have some stupid “ego” in them, they feel the woman owes them the whole world just bcuz they paid some silly “bride price” this is usually common among men who are still struggling to fix into the “middle family.

“And then they spend lots of money during the “marriage rites” so they just keep reminding the woman of how much they paid as “bride price” and the huge amount of money they spend traditionally to the direct family of the bride. They feel the woman should worship them.”

Akuapem Poloo Granted Bail In The Sum Of $13,900

The Ghanaian actress, Rosemond Alade Brown popularly known as Akuapem Poloo, has been granted bail by the court.

The bail was in the sum of 80,000 cedis ($13,900) pending her appeal against her 90-day jail sentence for posting a naked photo of herself beside her son on social media.

The judge explained that her bail was because she was a young first-time offender, and had shown remorse by pleading guilty to the charge.

The judge added that the court considered the welfare of her son when deciding her release on bail.

The actress was recently sentenced to 3 months in prison by the Circuit Court in Accra for going nude in a picture she took with her son on his birthday.

Judge Christiana Cann, in her pronoucement of Poloo’s jail sentence, said that the sentence would serve as a deterrent to the general public given increasing levels of moral decadence in Ghana.

Though at the time, some agreed with the judge’s remarks, but social media users had been calling for the actress’s release using the hashtag #FreeAkuapemPoloo.

Meanwhile, the Ghanaian award winning News Anchor, Serwaa Amihere, has contrary opinion about Poloo’s release, as she wrote: “A person is convicted on her OWN PLEA. This means that the person accepts that he or she is wrong.

“The natural consequence of pleading guilty on your own volition means that you are ready to be punished. How are we asking for this person to be freed….”.

The actor then introduced a platform ‘Under the Microscope’ to his fans, and explained that it’s a channel through which issues that critically affect humanity will be discussed.

Let me introduce my special platform to you which will be captioned “Under the Microscope”. It is a channel through which you and I will be examining issues that critically affect us as a people.

“We shall make objective appraisals and even our subjectivity will be logical. It will be highly cerebral. This means emotional write-ups will not be accommodated whether from me or from contributors. It will be an all-inclusive platform,” he wrote.

“I cannot guarantee frequency in coming up with write-ups since my metier is still movie-making, but it will certainly not go dry. All facets of life will be covered so it will be worth its weight in gold,” he added.

The movie star pointed out the mistake fans and colleagues are making in the pronunciation and spelling of his name as ‘Osifo’ instead of ‘Usifo’.

He said: “Worth pointing out is the mistake people, including the press and even most of my colleagues, make. My name is Alex Usifo – not Alex Osifo (Usifo not Osifo).”

He also emphasized that he has a PhD certificate from Babcock University and not an honorary, so, he should be addressed Dr. Alex Usifo.

For the record. I have a PhD in Information Resources Management (IRM) from Babcock University, Ilishan-Remo, Ogun State. I graduated in 2016, so I am actually Dr. Alex Usifo. It took me five good years of academic rigour to earn this, it is not honorary,” he said.

He stated that scammers have circulated wrong information about him, which has affected his followership as he keeps changing his social media account.

Scammers too have been having fun churning out wrong information about me. This has negatively affected my followership because I keep changing my Instagram handles and starting afresh,” he said.

One of the implications of this is that my handles never get validated. I sincerely hope this statement will correct such misrepresentation and dishonesty,” he added.

Colleagues Pay Tributes To The Veteran Nollywood Actor, Bruno Iwuoha

Nollywood actors and actresses have paid tributes to their departed colleague, Bruno Iwuoha.

The veteran actor, Bruno Iwuoha, died on Saturday, 10th April, at the age of 68 years, after a long battle with diabetes.

The news of his death was confirmed by Monalisa Chinda-Coker, Director of Communications, Actors Guild of Nigeria.

In her statement, she said: “On behalf of the entire members of the Actors Guild of Nigeria, the National President, Ejezie Emeka Rollas commiserate with the immediate family members, friends and fans. He prays that God comfort them at this moment of grief. May the souls of all faithful departed Rest In Peace.”

In 2015, the actor had disclosed his ailment at an interview with Brekete Family, on Human Rights Radio 101.1FM in Abuja, where he said that he never knew he had diabetes until a violent armed robbery attack landed him in hospital.

He explained: “I’ve gone to so many places; within the country, outside the country for treatment, until finally…finally, the thing [diabetes] claimed one of my sights. As I look at you now, I’m using only one sight. They call that glaucoma.

“And gradually, it’s affecting the other one. I discovered that this thing [diabetes] is a lifetime something. And it has robbed me of the job. And now, if I get a script, it will be hard for me to read it very well. And if I read it, if I strain my eyes for so long, it would look as if someone would lead me around the house or anywhere I want to go because it will affect the only one. So that’s my problem.”

Some of his colleagues in the movie industry, who spoke with Sunday Scoop, have expressed their minds on the death of the actor.

Actor Kanayo Kanayo stated:“The news of his death saddened me because we were very close. In fact, I called his phone severally but I was not able to get through. It is a very big loss to the movie industry. He had respect for the industry. It is a personal loss for me because of the bond we shared. Anytime we were on location, he was either in my room or I would be in his. We talked at length on different issues.”

Comedian actor, John Okafor, known as Mr Ibu, said: “I just heard about his death some minutes ago and I am still in shock that Bruno is no more. The type of person he was made it possible for people to emulate him. He succeeded in making good use of his age in teaching the younger ones. Even though it is painful that he is no more, I take solace in the fact that he was a good elder. He told me stories about life and he lived with caution. We also ate together. It is unfortunate that he is no more but we have to bear it.”

The President of the Actors Guild of Nigeria, Emeka Rollas, added: “I received the news of his death with great shock. He was a very good fellow and a dedicated member of the Actors Guild of Nigeria. Even at his age, he was one person that always called to ask what he was owing the guild (dues and levies) and what he was supposed to do. He paid all his dues as at when due. His illness was sad and we tried in our own way to support him but at a point, the illness got out of hand. I pray that God grants him eternally rest. I would really miss his fatherly advice and support.”

The actor is survived by his wife and six children.

His family members have been visiting the hospital within the past week as he was recuperating.

A member of his family told TMZ: “We are deeply saddened to announce today that our loved one, DMX, birth name of Earl Simmons, passed away at 50 years old at White Plains Hospital with his family by his side after being placed on life support for the past few days. Earl was a warrior who fought till the very end.”

DMX started his journey in music back then in the 1980s with his perfomance with Ready Ron, while simultaneously serving a jail time.

He finally got himself in the art in the 1990s, and was eventually signed to Columbia Records’ Ruffhouse imprint, and appeared on records with Jay-Z, LL Cool J, Mase and even the rock band, Sum 41.

He rose to fame in 1998 when he released his Ruff Ryders debut studio album “It’s Dark and Hell is Hot” to critical acclaim and commercial success.

The rapper produced 4 singles – “Get At Me Dog,” “How’s It Goin’ Down,” “Stop Being Greedy” and his best known track “Ruff Ryders’ Anthem,” that became the song everyone played to get hyped.

‘Ruff Ryders” has gone down in history as one of the greatest hip-hop songs ever, and it ended up making it on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart.

He followed up that success quickly with his 2nd album “Flesh of My Flesh, Blood of My Blood”, which came out in December of 1998, and ended up hitting #1.

At the time, he became the second rapper to release back-to-back albums in the same year after Tupac.

DMX rode on the success of his second album making his third album a hit with the single “Party Up (Up in Here)”, that helped him get major play on radio, in clubs and in movies.

In the film industry, DMX made his debut in 2000’s “Romeo Must Die,” which starred Jet Li playing a version of Romeo opposite Aaliyah.

Other movies that he featured in were “Exit Wounds”, “Cradle 2 the Grave”, “Never Die Alone” and “Last Hour.”

Though, the rapper made name in both music and movies, but fought many legal battles as he was charged for various offences on weapons, drugs, DUI and tax evasion. He served time for some of those cases, but always continued his music career.

DMX released hitsongs like “X Gon’ Give It to Ya”, “Where the Hood At?”, “Lord Give Me a Sign”, and “We in Here.” despite his prosecution.

His life turned around in 2019 after ending a 12-month sentence for tax evasion, and had long battled with substance abuse and it was at this point that he did his last rehab stint.

He made his return to the stage in December 2019 when he hit Hakkasan in Las Vegas.

In July 2020, DMX was involved in a versus battle with Snoop Dogg as over 500,000 fans worldwide watched the two rap legends on Instagram Live.

The rappers entertained their fans as they complemented each other, and rocked some of their most iconic tracks, as DMX hopped on and joined Snoop for ‘Ain’t No Fun.’

Snoop also got down with “Drop It Like It’s Hot” and “Gin and Juice” while DMX did “Where My Dogs At” and his megahit-song “X Gon’ Give It To Ya,” which brought Snoop out of his seat.

DMX is reportedly survived by his 15 children, as the youngest was born in 2016 to his fiancee, Desiree Lindstrom.

Dolly Parton Loses Uncle, Bill Owens, And Writes A Heartwarming Farewell For Him

The country music legend, Dolly Parton, has lost her Uncle, Bill Owen, who passed away today.

The music star has shown her love for him as she wrote a heartwarming tribute for him.

She wrote: “I’ve lost my beloved Uncle Bill Owens. I knew my heart would break when he passed, and it did. I’ll start this eulogy by saying I wouldn’t be here if he hadn’t been there.

“He was there… there in my young years to encourage me to keep playing my guitar, to keep writing my songs, to keep practicing my singing.

“And he was there to help build my confidence standing on stage where he was always standing behind me or close beside me with his big ol’ red Gretsch guitar.”

She reminisced that she got signed up by recording company through Uncle Bill’s effort.

He was there to take me around to all of the local shows, got me my first job on the “Cas Walker Show.” He took me back-&-forth to Nashville through the years, walked up-&-down the streets with me, knocking on doors to get me signed up to labels or publishing companies,” she said.

She added: “It’s really hard to say or to know for sure what all you owe somebody for your success. But I can tell you for sure that I owe Uncle Billy an awful lot.”

Parton stated that Uncle Bill wrote many songs for her, and many with her including “Put It Off Until Tomorrow”, which she won her first big award with in 1966.

She said: “Uncle Bill was so many things. He loved the music, loved to play, loved his guitar and loved to write and sing. He wrote great songs, at least 800 of them through the years. We wrote several songs together, the biggest one being “Put It Off Until Tomorrow.” We won our first big award on that one back in 1966. It was the BMI Song of the Year.

“He wrote songs that were recorded by Loretta Lynn, Porter Wagoner, Ricky Skaggs, Kris Kristofferson and many others. He also traveled the road with many big artists playing his guitar, including playing on stage with me in my early years in Nashville.”

Parton wrote that Uncle Bill was everything to her about her music career, and she would forever be grateful to him.

She wrote: “Uncle Bill worked at Dollywood from the time we opened in the family show for many years. He was funny, friendly and generous. He always had a kind word for everybody and gave good advice to young people starting in the business. He joined forces with Dollywood, The American Chestnut Foundation, University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and The American Eagle Foundation to bring back the endangered chestnut tree to the Great Smoky Mountain area. That was his passion. He also championed the cause of protecting the natural environment at Dollywood in 1986. During that time, he took it upon himself, with his wife Sandy, to plant 70,000 trees on the Park property.

“I bet a lot of our own relatives don’t even know all of the great things that Uncle Bill did behind the scenes through his life. But the greatest thing he ever did for me was to help me see my dreams come true and for that I will be forever grateful. I’m sure that Uncle Bill’s friends, fans, his wife Sandy, his kids, grandkids and great-grandkids will join me when I say that we will always love you. Rest in peace, Uncle Bill.”

The Chair of BAFTA’s Film Committee, Marc Samuelson, said: “Noel is an inspiration to me and to many others, for his central and much-needed role in supporting and championing diverse voices in the British film industry.

“He is a multi-hyphenate who early on in his career has managed successfully to cross the line from respected actor to filmmaker. He truly is able to do it all – acting, writing, directing and producing.

“His authentic portrayal of London life in his critically acclaimed Hood trilogy cemented his place in British cinema and he continues to push boundaries with his work today.

“He is now building a hugely successful production company, giving opportunities to a wide range of talented people from many different under-represented groups. I cannot think of a more deserving recipient for this year’s award.”

In acknowledging his recommendation for the award, Noel Clarke said: “Thank you BAFTA for this acknowledgment and recognition of my work over the past two decades. I will endeavour to continue to make ground-breaking work and open doors for underrepresented people that may not often get a chance.”

Clarke, whose first TV appearance was over two decades ago in the ground-breaking Channel 4 series, Metrosexuality, has played a pivotal role in bringing diversity to British screens in front and behind the camera and pushing under-represented talent and stories to the forefront of cinema and television.

He won the Laurence Olivier Award for ‘Most Promising Newcomer’ for his performance in the play ‘Where Do We Live at the Royal Court’.

The movie star wrote and starred in the cult phenomenon featured film Hood trilogy, Kidulthood (2006), Adulthood (2008) and Brotherhood (2016), and directed the last two.

He received the BAFTA Rising Star Award in 2009.

On TV appearances, he is well-known for his roles as Mickey Smith in Dr. Who and Wyman Norris in Auf, Wiedershen, Pet.

In 2007, Clarke founded his own production company, Unstoppable Entertainment, which was later joined by fellow actor/producer Jason Maza.

Their ambitions are to champion fresh, emerging and diverse voices, which has seen the company produced over 10 feature films including Jessica Hynes’ directorial debut “The Fight” and “10×10”, directed by Suzi Ewing.

The company joined forces with All3Media in 2018, and launched Unstoppable Film and Television to expand their scope to include television.

Clarke created the drama “Bulletproof” with Ashley Walters and starred in the series which has been one of the highest rated series on Sky since debuting in 2018.

The fourth session of the series is set to start filming later this year as confirmed.

The BAFTA prize for Outstanding British Contribution to Cinema Award is presented annually in honour of Michael Balcon, the British film producer known for his work with Ealing Studios.

Nigerians Kick Against Governor Wike’s Gift To Burna Boy

The Governor said: “All of you that have come to today, the Rivers people and the Niger -Delta people that have come to perform, I am proud of you. All of you will go home with N10m each. ”

The Governor also promised a piece of land at the old GRA, Port Harcourt, to Burna Boy and financing the construction of the building.

The Rivers State government hosted their son, Burna Boy, in commemoration of his achievement at winning grammys for the best global music album of the year.

Meanwhile, Nigerians have reacted to the news of the promise made by the Rivers State Governor:

Tife_fabunmi @Tife_fabunmi wrote: “It’s not the gift that Wike gave Burna and other artistes that is making people complain, it’s the fact that there are so many workers/pensioners who are yet to be paid their salary/pension for months in the same state and he was till able to gift such huge amount.”
DaddyMØ @therealdaddymo1 stated: “When they say Nigerians deserve the leaders it gets, this is part of why they say that. Gov Wike is so confident and unashamed to be paying artistes from government funds and people are hailing him but turn round and also criticize corruption in the same breath.”
Daddy D.O @DOlusegun said: “When they say Buhari is not working. This is what they mean. They miss the government of share the money which is why@burnaboy could not politely ask Wike to use that money to pay the five-year unpaid salaries of teachers in demonstration schools in Rivers State.”
ADEMOLA @RajiDraj said: “Burna Boy and the rest of the artistes will collect N10M each from Wike and celebrate it here. Next day they will tweet about lack of infrastructure and focus on Lagos State. Have they ever ask Wike about End SARS Judicial Panel of Inquiry?”
Wale Adetona @iSlimfit said: “The impulse gifting by Governor Wike is so unnecessary for a state that has failed to pay gratuity & pension.”

Femi Kuti As A Father And As A Musician Is Interwoven

Femi Anikulapo Kuti, the son of the legendary Afrobeat musician, Fela Anikulapo Kuti, had an interview with BBCpidgin, where he talked about the joint album with his son, Made Kuti, and his late father.

In talking about the spirituality of Afrobeat as people perceive, Femi Anikulapo Kuti explained that Afrobeat is spiritual, as the music itself is generally spiritual, and it’s the only profession that you can’t touch but touches you.

On The Joint Album Released With His Son
I want to show the world how much I love my son, I want to inspire the world to spread more love and inspirations.

When I thought of the matter, I called my son and I said: I don’t think any father and son have done such collaboration before, but we will the first to do it. It will show how much we love ourselves as a family and how much we care for ourselves. And I told my son that many would like the idea and they would emulate it, he was happy to hear it.

On What Femi Found Interesting About His Son
What I’m happy about my son, Made, is that after all these years, he stands on his own with respect to his father and his grandfather. He’s very humble and he’s a kind of child that you thank God for.

What’s The Difference Between Femi As Father And Femi As A Musician
Femi as a father and Femi as a musician is interwoven as both rely on each other. Femi the musician knows family comes first and Femi the father, family comes first as well.

What Do You Still Remember About Your Father, Fela,
Many things to learn from my father, and many things I respect about him. I respect his bravery, courage, discipline as a musician, and the most important one he’s righteousness. My father didn’t like lie and would not hide his feeling.

How Do You See Afrobeat Genre
I never doubted the Afrobeat music as a child and it inspired me in many ways, maybe because Fela’s song was an eye-opener about real issues in our society.

How Do You Relax
I don’t normally relax and even my family are complaining. I used to wake up around 9-10am in the morning then I go straight for my sax and practice for like 3 hours, take trumpet for 5-6 hours practice. Then, I play with the children and we engage in football competitions.

What’s Your Favorite Meal
I like beans but after every performance I like to eat eba (cassava mold) because it’s easy to consume despite my son kicking against it. I love fried plantain very much.
